My Role: UI/UX designer & Researcher

Timeline: Faburary 2024

Project Overview

Spot Scout is a versatile, location-based application designed to meet the unique needs of today’s freelancers, remote workers, students, and community-focused individuals. It goes beyond the typical Wi-Fi hotspot finder by offering users the ability to discover a wide range of public places where they can work, study, or engage in social activities. From quiet libraries and cozy cafes to vibrant community centers and parks, Spot Scout provides detailed information on various venues, including amenities, noise levels, availability of power outlets, and hours of operation. Additionally, it features a dedicated section for discovering clubs and group meetings, making it an invaluable tool for those looking to connect with others and explore new hobbies.

The goal of Spot Scout is to create a comprehensive platform that supports the dynamic lifestyles of individuals who seek flexibility in their work environment and value community engagement. It aims to be the go-to app for finding the perfect spot that balances productivity with social opportunities.

The Challenge

The rise of remote work and the lifestyle of digital nomads highlight the need for accessible, comfortable public spaces that support both productivity and social interaction. Traditional solutions often focus solely on either workspace or social event discovery, leaving a gap for a unified solution that addresses both needs effectively.

Problem Statement: “Finding public spaces conducive to both individual work and social/professional engagement presents a significant challenge.”

Research and Competitor Analysis

Competitors
  1. WeWork App: Focuses on providing access to coworking spaces with amenities for professionals but lacks a broad selection of casual, public places for work or socializing.

  2. Meetup: Specializes in connecting individuals through group events based on shared interests, without a specific emphasis on work-friendly environments.

  3. Starbucks App: Offers a reliable option for finding coffee shops to work in but does not cater to the wider needs for variety in workspace types or information on community events.

Spot Scout’s Differentiation:

Spot Scout stands out by offering a seamless integration of workspace discovery and social engagement in public venues. It fills the gap left by competitors by providing a comprehensive listing of various public spaces along with details on clubs and group meetings happening within these spaces. This approach caters to a broad audience, making Spot Scout an all-encompassing platform for those seeking the ideal balance between work and play.

The Design

Wireframes

Below is a sample wireframe from the Spot Scout project, which I designed to illustrate the user interface and functionality of the app. This wireframe showcases the proposed layout and interaction flow, serving as a visual blueprint for how users can navigate between different screens to find their ideal workspace or social spot.

Usability Testing

Usability Testing

I conducted brief usability testing sessions with four participants to evaluate the Spot Scout app's user interface and overall functionality. After the testing, I gathered feedback through surveys, which proved to be an effective way to collect actionable insights. The testing process was successful, with three participants indicating they would use the product regularly, and one participant expressing they might consider using it. All participants were able to complete the benchmark tasks assigned during the sessions.

However, feedback highlighted some areas for improvement, particularly concerning color contrast and the adequacy of information provided about the spots. Based on this feedback, I increased the contrast within the app to enhance readability and added filters to improve the granularity and usefulness of the information displayed. These adjustments are aimed at creating a more user-friendly and informative experience, encouraging broader adoption and satisfaction among potential users.

What Went Well:

I am highly satisfied with the outcomes of the Spot Scout project. The process of creating user personas was particularly rewarding, as it allowed me to tailor the app's design to the specific needs and challenges faced by freelancers and remote workers looking for versatile workspaces. Engaging directly with potential users through interviews was instrumental, providing crucial insights into the features they value most, such as detailed information on amenities and community events.

What Didn’t Go Well:

During the initial stages of UI design, I encountered issues with the visibility due to a lighter color palette which affected the readability of text on the app. Additionally, the early version of the product did not adequately distinguish between the different types of spots (like cafes, libraries, and community centers), which made it challenging for users to quickly find the type of workspace or social setting they were looking for. To address these issues, I revisited the color schemes and developed multiple alternatives. A subsequent user survey helped identify the most appealing and functional color scheme, which significantly enhanced contrast and overall user satisfaction. We also refined the categorization and presentation of various spots to make distinctions clearer and more user-friendly.

What Can Be Improved:

While the current color scheme and categorizations have been well-received, further refinements in contrast on specific screens could enhance usability, especially for users with visual impairments. Additionally, the app would benefit from gathering more detailed information about each spot, such as real-time occupancy rates, specific amenities, and user reviews. Providing clearer and more comprehensive descriptions of each location will help users make informed decisions tailored to their specific needs. This improvement aims to enhance the app's functionality by making it a more reliable and informative tool for finding the perfect spot, whether for work or socializing.
