Goodreads Landing Page Redesign
My Role: UI/UX Designer & Researcher
Timeline: March 2024
Tools: Figma, FigJam, Google Trends
Project Overview
Goodreads, as a sanctuary for book lovers, holds immense potential to cultivate a vibrant literary community. Yet, my experience, aligned with the community's feedback, highlighted a need for a redesign. Key features were buried, and the website lacked intuitive navigation, preventing users from fully engaging with the communal and unique aspects of Goodreads.
Understanding User Experience
The redesign's foundation was built upon an in-depth analysis of user reviews and complaints. By delving into the users' shared experiences, I was able to pinpoint four main areas that severely impacted user satisfaction:
Unclear Navigation: A common grievance among users was the site’s convoluted navigation, making the journey to desired features a frustrating endeavor.
Community Aspect in the Backseat: The social core of Goodreads, encompassing book clubs and forums, lacked the prominence needed to engage users meaningfully.
Essential Features Not Highlighted: Goodreads houses unique features such as the Reading Challenge and Goodreads Choice Awards, but these were often found buried, not celebrated as they should be.
Cluttered and Overwhelming Design: The plethora of options and information on the page led to a visually and functionally cluttered space, causing user fatigue and disengagement.
Personas
To better address the community's needs, I crafted two distinct user personas representative of the core Goodreads audience:
Nora: the Community Navigator

Nora is a voracious reader whose pleasure in reading is amplified by connecting with others. She relies on Goodreads for this sense of community but feels the existing design does not facilitate these interactions sufficiently.
Tristan: the Challenge Participant

Tristan is motivated by goals and community recognition, participating eagerly in the Reading Challenge. Tristan finds the lack of visibility for the Goodreads Choice Awards and other signature features discouraging, as these elements could significantly enhance the user experience.
The Design
Redesign Strategy
With the users' needs in mind, the redesign focused on transforming Goodreads into a platform that's not just about books but also about the people who read them. The strategy involved:
-
Refined Navigation: A more intuitive and simplified navigation structure was implemented, which allowed users to easily understand the many facets of the page without feeling lost.
-
Community Highlight: The homepage was restructured to put a spotlight on the community. This includes well-defined sections for book clubs and user-curated lists.
-
Feature Visibility: I integrated prominent sections dedicated to Goodreads' unique features. This ensured that the Reading Challenge and the Goodreads Choice Awards were no longer just features but focal points of engagement.
-
Streamlined Interface: Adopting a minimalist design approach, I reduced visual clutter, prioritizing content and community features over less essential elements. This not only decluttered the page but also significantly improved the site's initial aesthetics and user flow.
Design Guidlines
My aim was to stay faithful to the original brand guidelines as much as possible, which meant using the same fonts and color platte as the original oodreads page.

The Final Redesigned Page

The Conclusion
This redesign of Goodreads transforms it into a more navigable, community-focused, and feature-highlighting platform. It responds directly to the voice of the users, aiming to create a seamless, engaging, and enriching experience for every reader. The result is a rejuvenated Goodreads that not only enables readers to track and find books but also serves as a communal hub where their passion for reading flourishes.
